Combine that with a finely honed sense of dynamics, a big signature tone featuring huge toms and in-your-face snare, and an uncanny attentiveness to every moment of a performance, and you may as well have custom designed the ideal rock drummer. I didn't know; I was so unsophisticated. You gotta find your crowd and then you gotta give it up to them a little too, you know; you can't force them to love you. That was probably part of the charm was that I didn't know, and I think the very thing that used to be charming became a burden to [the Heartbreakers]. A series of writing projects followed, which lead to Petty asking Zanes to write the biography. It may be time to change channels. So I think nowadays it's so much by rote, your first album can sell a million records, and it's no big deal - they'll still drop you [laughs]. Ive known him since I was 15. He told me the story of a marriage that wasnt working, but hes was trying as hard as he could to keep it together. Collaboration is a whole other thing, you have to let the collaboration happen, and that's a wonderful lesson to learn. And it hasn't taken me very seriously. He was pissed, Petty told writer Paul Zollo. I just heard "record deal"! So you never bought into the whole idea that rock'n'roll is just for rebellious kids?No, it wasn't a personal rebellion for meit was a joy and also a way for me to draw attention to myself [laughter], which was what I always wanted to do. So I'd say on the way to success: doubt. Pettys got a very strong voice, of course, but I needed the foil. Then today, as soon as his tour bus hit Philadelphia, it all began again with three more. So I think that a lot of people made their best work when they were hungry 'cause they had to. I remember having a really hard time once on some track. He soon found himself in the middle of some conversations that the band was having through himconversations they had never had with themselves. But other times I've been in a room where you just strike an E chord and the guy starts singing. It really came out very intense, at times remorseful, at times angry but he helped the book immeasurably. I didnt know whether to say, Thank you or Fuck you. I only knew I was grateful to have had the experience of having all those men in my life. Over and over and over and over and over. It must be tougher to hang onto the premise of artistic integrity in that situation.Well, conversely, it's a thrill to know that you've had some success. Lynch isnt looking for thespotlight anymore, though, according to his interview last week. You know? It's great when you actually find somebody that doesn't hear music the way you do and you start to love them for it. There's actually channels for this. Without doing any research, I couldn't tell you what erstwhile Heartbreaker Stan Lynch has been doing with his life for the past three decades.
